Andii Sutton Carpentry: Reliable craftsmanship, honest advice and renovations built on trust.

In the building scene especially in regional areas, reputation travels fast and so does word of mouth. For nearly twenty years, Andii Sutton has quietly built a name across Hyams Beach, Huskisson and Vincentia for craftsmanship that is grounded in honesty and reliability.

Carpentry wasn’t a childhood plan. It began when Andii bought a block of land and then decided to build his own home twenty years ago. What started as a practical decision quickly turned into something more. He found he genuinely enjoyed the process, the structure, the problem-solving and the satisfaction of seeing something take shape. Encouraged by his brother, a local builder, Andii began his apprenticeship at 30. Nineteen years later, he’s still working in the same coastal region he holidayed in as a child and ultimately chose to call home.

Today, Andii Sutton Carpentry focuses on the kinds of projects that define life in the Bay & Basin; timber decks designed for outdoor entertaining, pergolas that extend outdoor living, modern bathroom renovations for older homes, and large-scale refurbishments that unfold carefully over time. Residential repairs and structural rectification work are also a regular part of the job, critical to ensuring homes remain safe and secure.

On one recent project, what appeared to be a straightforward deck replacement revealed more serious structural concerns beneath the surface. The front of the house had no proper bearer support, leaving sections effectively unsupported. Rather than simply covering the issue, Andii documented the damage, explained the implications and replaced the structural elements properly before moving forward.

“It’s those little things,” he says. “You take photos, show the owner what’s going on, explain what needs to be done. That way they understand it.”

That transparency sits at the core of how he works. Renovations, particularly in coastal environments, rarely unfold without surprises. Timber moves, moisture finds its way in, and older builds often conceal shortcuts taken decades ago. Andii’s approach is to deal with issues early, speak plainly, honestly and give homeowners clear options for them to make informed decisions.

“Be upfront straight away. Tell them what it is and what you can do. It makes it easier for them, and you can sleep at night, knowing you’re doing the right thing by the client.”

In a region with no shortage of trades, reliability is often the real differentiator. Andii answers calls, returns messages and, if he can’t take on a job, points people in the right direction. Clients know they won’t be left waiting indefinitely for a response or wondering when someone might show up. If he says he’ll be there at 07:00, he will be there at 07:00. If something changes, he communicates it.

That steadiness carries through to his craft. He prefers working at a consistent pace rather than rushing to keep up with someone else’s speed. “If you try to go as fast as the quickest person, that’s when mistakes happen,” he says. The old adage of measure twice, cut once remains relevant. And if something isn’t right, it gets fixed properly until it is right.

Some of his most rewarding projects are long-term collaborations. One home he has worked on since the beginning of COVID has evolved year by year, new cladding one stage, windows the next, now a substantial extension at the rear. The owner has been involved throughout, reviewing photos, selecting materials and discussing options as the project has unfolded.

“Building shouldn’t be as stressful as people make it,” Andii says. “If the owners are involved and understand what’s happening, it becomes something you can both enjoy.”

That collaborative mindset also shapes the way he approaches design challenges. When homeowners present ideas for a new bathroom or renovation layout, Andii will often sketch alternatives, consider how spaces function practically and, where helpful, bring in trusted trades or family members for a second opinion. It’s not about overriding a client’s vision, but refining it to work better within the realities of structure, flow and budget.

Construction and trades run through the family. While his father worked outside the trade, both grandfathers were builders and many extended family members remain in construction. His brother Jeremy is owner of Building Revolutions, and Andii frequently collaborates with experienced trades across projects. Additionally, his other brother, Nathan, runs a local electrician business. In a close-knit regional market, those working relationships matter.

Beyond the tools, there’s another dimension to Andii’s story that clients may not immediately notice. Born with hearing loss as opposed to the effects of industrial noise, he spent much of his life adapting; positioning himself carefully in conversations and relying heavily on visual cues. In recent years, hearing aid technology has significantly improved both his work and home life, allowing him to connect more easily with colleagues and family.

“It’s changed everything,” he says. “Even just hearing my kids properly.”

Perhaps that experience contributes to his attentiveness on site, watching closely, listening deliberately and ensuring instructions and explanations are clearly understood, for all concerned.

Away from work, family and community take priority. A rugby union player in his early years, Andii now supports his son’s rugby team at the Shoalhaven Rugby Club, helping coach and pass on experience. Coaching, he says, brings a different kind of satisfaction.

And when the workday ends, the ocean calls. Living just minutes from the water, a quick swim is often the perfect reset after a long day on site.

Andii Sutton Carpentry may not rely on flashy branding or big promises. Instead, its value lies in something simpler: honest advice before the job begins, open communication throughout, practical and creative solutions within budget, and reliable follow-through once the work is complete. In a coastal region where homes are continually evolving to meet lifestyle and environmental demands, that steady, relationship-driven approach is what keeps clients returning, and recommending.
